Discover Zakynthos

Zakynthos is the southernmost and the third island of the Ionian Islands in area and population. The area of the island is 406 square kilometers and its population is 35,000 inhabitants. It is located 8.5 nautical miles south of Kefalonia, 9.5 miles west of the Peloponnese and approximately 300 kilometers west of the capital, Athens. Its geographical position allows the traveler to easily visit the other Ionian islands or even travel to the opposite coast of the Peloponnese where the ancient city of Olympia is located, among others, where the Olympic Games were held in ancient times. In addition, it is easy, due to its direct transport connection, to communicate with the major cities of Greece, Patras, Athens, Thessaloniki.
Zakynthos is an island full of contrasts, it is mostly mountainous, with low pine-covered mountains and fertile plains. In the north, east and south there are countless picturesque beaches, while in the west, on its imposing rocky shores, many sea caves are formed, such as the wonderful Blue Cave in the northwest of the island. The climate of Zakynthos is mild Mediterranean with lots of rain and lots of sunshine. To this it obviously owes its always rich vegetation, a fact that justifies the characterizations of “Ilyessa” and “Flower of the East” (Fior di Levante) by Homer and the Venetians respectively. It is an island with rich agricultural production, based mainly on in the cultivation of olives, citrus fruits and raisins, with developed business activity, mainly in the field of tourism, and with a rich historical tradition, as the island has been for many centuries a crossroads of peoples and cultures.

Zákynthos Town

On the island’s east coast, extending in a wide arc along the gently sloping shores of a bay, Zákynthos Town is the capital of Zákynthos. Many of its Neoclassical buildings were demolished by the 1953 earthquake, but its paved streets and squares, filled with bakeries, cafés, boutiques, and jewelry stores, are still a joy to explore on foot.

Alykes

Alykes is an organized tourist resort, with great sandy beach, ideal for those looking for a unforgettable stay. A perfect location to explore non tourist areas of Zakynthos. Here visitors will find almost everything. Alykes village is located 18 km to the north-west of Zakynthos town. Attractions like Shipwreck, Blue Caves, Makris Gialos and Xigia Beach or the southern towns of Tsilivi and Zakynthos are very close along the main island road.

Shipwreck Beach

Probably the most photographed and, arguably, beautiful beach in all of Greece, Shipwreck Beach lies in the so-called Smuggler’s Cove on Zakynthos’ west coast. Made up of fine white pebbles backed by cliffs, the beach takes its name from the wreck of a contraband cigarette smuggling ship that washed up here in 1980.

Blue Caves

On the northern tip of the island, at Cape Skinari, you’ll find the most spectacular so-called Blue Caves. Inside, the bright blue sea reflects the color of the sky, which is mirrored off the walls of the caves and creates an absolutely magical azure and sapphire light scheme. You can visit the Blue Caves in a small glass-bottom boat, which departs from Agios Nikolaos (on the northeast coast, 32 kilometers from Zakynthos Town), or as part of the longer round-the-island cruise from Zakynthos Town.

Keri Caves

On the southwest coast, 14 kilometers from Zákynthos Town, close to the village of Kerí, a row of dramatic caves opens directly onto a crystal-clear turquoise sea, and exploring them with a mask and snorkel or scuba dive tank is one of the top things to do on the island – the lighting effects of the sun reflecting through the water and onto the cave walls makes for some amazing photos and video. It’s possible to visit the caves as part of an organized excursion, or rent a boat and go independently.

Porto Limnionas

With crystal-clear, blue-green water set against a backdrop of cliffs and caves, Porto Limnionas is one of the top secluded swimming spots on the island. In a wild location down an only recently paved road, not far from the small village of Agios Leon, it is gaining in popularity each year, and in the height of summer can get crowded. Sun-loungers can be rented from two local restaurants with terraces fronting the sea, and once in the water there is good snorkeling, along with caves and even an underwater bridge.

Myzithres beach

Myzithres, the small and the large, are in fact two tall conical and white rocks, located directly below the lighthouse of Keri. They got their name from the local cheese produced on the island, Myzithra, which as we all know is pure white. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, the most beautiful beaches have strange names..Probably to charm people and avoid overcrowding.

Xigia Sulphur Beach

Xigia Sulphur Beach definitely has a bit of an eggy smell about it, but it’s beautiful nonetheless. Located down a rocky incline (wear proper shoes), the white pebble sand beach is set within a secluded cove, protected on three sides by sheer cliffs. The water is quite beautiful here, especially around midday, when the sun is directly overhead and makes the pebbles gleam.
